چکیده

A sample of 59 sight lines to reddened Galactic OB stars was examined for correlations of the strength of the CO Fourth Positive (AΠ − XΣ) absorption band system with the ultraviolet interstellar extinction curve parameters. We used archival high-dispersion NEWSIPS IUE spectra to measure the CO absorption for comparison to parametric fits of the extinction curves from the literature. A strong correlation with the non-linear far-UV curvature term was found with greater absorption, normalized to E(B − V ), being associated with more curvature. A weaker trend with the linear extinction term was also found. Mechanisms for enhancing CO in dust environments exhibiting high non-linear curvature are discussed. Subject headings: Dust, extinction — ISM: abundances — ISM: molecules — ultraviolet: ISM

Fuse Measurements of Far-ultraviolet Extinction. Iii. the Dependence on R(v) and Discrete Feature Limits from 75 Galactic Sightlines

We present a sample of 75 extinction curves derived from FUSE far-ultraviolet spectra supplemented by existing IUE spectra. The extinction curves were created using the standard pair method based on a new set of dereddened FUSE+IUE comparison stars. Molecular hydrogen absorption features were removed using individualized H2 models for each sightline. The general shape of the FUSE extinction (8....

HIGHLY IONIZED GAS IN THE GALACTIC HALO: A FUSE SURVEY OF O vi ABSORPTION TOWARD 22 HALO STARS

Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) spectra of 22 Galactic halo stars are studied to determine the amount of O vi in the Galactic halo between 0.3 and 10 kpc from the Galactic midplane. Strong O vi 1031.93 absorption was detected toward 21 stars, and a reliable 3 upper limit was obtained toward HD 97991. The weaker member of the O vi doublet at 1037.62 Å could be studied toward only s...

Photometry of the Galactic bulge, collected during the OGLE-II microlensing search, indicates high and non-uniform interstellar extinction toward the observed fields. We use the mean I-band magnitude and V −I color of red clump stars as a tracer of interstellar extinction toward four small regions of the Galactic bulge with highly variable reddening. Similar test is performed for the most redde...

Detection of mid-infrared aromatic hydrocarbon emission features from the Small Magellanic Cloud

The mid-infrared (5–16 μm) spectral energy distribution for an individual quiescent molecular cloud in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) was observed using ISOCAM. The spectrum is dominated by broad emission bands at 6.2, 7.7, and 11.3 μm, with weaker bands at 8.6 and 12.7 μm. As these are the same bands, with similar shape and relative strengths, as observed in the ISM of our Galaxy, the same c...
